Here’s a sampling of original Bum drinks, three of them from his latest book, Beachbum Berry Remixed. We chose them from Remixed’s 241 recipes for their streamlined proportions, which make them quick and easy to assemble. Because, gentle reader, if there’s one thing we hate more than making extra work for ourselves, it’s making extra work for you.
We came up with this one to honor the tenth anniversary of Sven Kirsten’s Book Of Tiki — the original “tiki reviver.”
Recipe: Into your shaker pour 1 ounce each fresh lime juice, nutmeg syrup (recipe below), and gold Barbados rum; 1 1/4 ounces dark Jamaican rum; and 1 teaspoon apricot brandy. Shake well with plenty of ice cubes, then pour unstrained into your Book Of Tiki tribute mug (pictured above) or a tall glass. If necessary, add more ice to fill. Top with a pinch of freshly ground nutmeg.
To make nutmeg syrup, in a saucepan place 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup water, and 1/4 cup crushed whole nutmeg (use a mortar and pestle; you’ll need about 8 to 10 nutmegs). Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar, then lower heat and simmer lightly for 15 minutes. Cool, strain, and bottle it. It’ll keep a week in the fridge.
Miehana, “God Of The Orange Grove,” was first conjured by artists Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily to bless their 1996 exhibit of Polynesian Pop style at the Anaheim Museum. (Spell “Miehana” backwards and see what you get!) Kevin and Jody designed their Miehana mug as an offering to the deity who’d ensured their success; for something to put in the mug, Kevin asked the Bum for an orange-themed punch.
Recipe: Into your shaker pour 1 ounce each fresh lime juice, orange juice, unsweetened pineapple juice, Grand Marnier, gold Virgin Islands rum, and coconut rum. Shake well with ice cubes. Pour unstrained into a Miehana mug (pictured above) or tall glass. If necessary, add more ice to fill the glass.
We whipped this up to fill the mug of our mug (pictured above), which was created by artist and Tiki Revival pioneer Bosko Hrnjak. (Bosko also designed the cover of Beachbum Berry Remixed, as well as the covers for our first three books.) We gave quite a few of these mugs away over the years — to our eternal regret, as they’re now going for hundreds of dollars on eBay. When it comes to financial affairs, once a bum, always a bum!
Recipe: Into your shaker pour 1 1/2 ounces tequila, and 1 ounce each Bärenjäger honey liqueur, fresh lime juice, and unfiltered apple juice (the cloudy kind). Shake well with plenty of ice. Pour unstrained into a Beachbum Berry mug or tall glass.
Every April, thousands of Tikiphiles from around the world migrate to Fort Lauderdale, where Christie “Tiki Kiliki” White throws the Polynesian Pop party of the year — otherwise known as the Hukilau. The Bum crafted this drink in Miss Kiliki’s honor when attending his first Hukilau in 2006.
Recipe: Into your shaker pour 2 ounces Appleton V/X rum, and 1/2 ounce each fresh lime juice, unsweetened pineapple juice, orange juice, passion fruit syrup, and Fee Brothers coffee syrup.
